Removed parts need to be stored outside vehicle, not on seats or in luggage compartment

Make the steps to improve your overall performance.

Why its important to implement

Parts carry road grime, sharp edges, and adhesives that damage interior trims. Proper trolley storage prevents costly interior cleaning and replacement work.

Interior protection from removed parts

When parts are removed from the vehicle they should always be placed on the assigned parts trolley or parts bucket. If parts are placed in the vehicle, either on the floor, the seats or the rear of the vehicle there is a risk that the interior trims can be damaged or dirtied.

Road grime contamination risk

Often parts removed come from the outside of the vehicle and as such they hold a certain amount of road grime even if the vehicle was washed prior to coming into the work shop. This road grime will come loose in while sitting in the car and cause additional work for cleaning or staining that cannot be removed.

Adhesive staining concerns

Most internal door trims seal or liner has a very sticky glue that could also stain the internal trims very easy and is very difficult to remove.

Physical damage from parts weight

Most parts on vehicles have sharp edges and carry some weight, when these encounter the soft seats and trims or rub against hard plastic items they can leave marks that cannot be removed.

Business Impact

Profit loss from trim cleaning/replacement costs, key-to-key delays from cleaning area backups, customer dissatisfaction from business-caused damage.

Profit

If trims are excessively dirtied, stained or damaged the business will have to take time and money to clean or replace the damaged parts

Key to key

If the vehicle is delayed in the cleaning area because of damage or stains caused by leaving trims inside the vehicle the "key to key" will be affected

Customer satisfaction

Unnecessary damage cause by the business will cause customers to be unhappy and lose confidence in the business

Overall Business Impact

Profit is affected when trims become excessively dirtied, stained, or damaged, requiring the business to spend time and money on cleaning or replacement. Key to key times are extended when vehicles are delayed in the cleaning area due to damage or stains caused by improper parts storage. Customer satisfaction decreases when unnecessary damage caused by the business leads to customer unhappiness and loss of confidence.

action steps

Purchase sufficient trolleys/buckets, train parts trolley processes, implement traffic light systems, establish delivery procedures, enforce compliance.

Policy Enforcement

Strong internal warnings if policy not followed once established.

Management Oversight

Production Manager should check and enforce this process.

Technician Training

Implement and train technicians to place all removed parts from vehicles onto the parts trolley provided to the bay with the new parts.

Delivery Processes

Implement and train process where parts department deliver parts trolleys to the work bay for each job.

Traffic Light System

Implement and train traffic light process for parts trolleys.

Parts Management Process

Implement and train process where the parts manager checks every part has arrived according to the estimate before the vehicle is booked in for repair, labels each part and places them onto a trolley exclusively for that job.

Equipment Purchase

Purchase enough trolleys and parts buckets for weekly work volume.
